How you can help in this uncertain time

A national emergency declaration in response to a pandemic virus is new to all of us, and as a fundraising organization, we want to be sensitive to the unique situation of every single student, every alumnus, every friend of the University of Nebraska.

With economic uncertainty a reality for many, we ask for financial support with prudence. At the same time, some in our university family have reached out to ask how they can help, and some student support organizations have reached out to seek assistance. We’ve highlighted some funds below that allow you to help our students, patients and communities during this crisis.

Whether you’re able to give at this time or not, we extend our wishes for your health and safety.

Global Center for Health Security Response Fund

The Global Center for Health Security at the University of Nebraska Medical Center is home to the national Training, Simulation and Quarantine Center, which features the nation’s only federal quarantine unit and internationally acclaimed Nebraska Biocontainment Unit team.

Gifts to this fund support the work of the Global Center for Health Security in providing rapid response capabilities, including training, education, research and clinical expertise for evolving infectious diseases.

This fund will also support the research expertise of this group of leading experts. The work is laser-focused in fields that include drug discovery and public health on work such as tests to diagnose the virus, treatment and vaccine possibilities.

Nebraska Medicine Patient and Family Experience Fund

Gifts to the Nebraska Medicine Patient and Family Experience Fund provide assistance to hundreds of Nebraska Medicine patients and their families each year. By helping with basic needs such as emergency housing, meals, hygiene essentials, gas cards and transportation, this fund allows patients and their families to focus on physical recovery rather than the emotional and financial strain that accompany a hospital stay.

University of Nebraska Emergency Assistance Fund

The University of Nebraska Emergency Assistance Fund was created to help support students and employees on all four campuses who are now facing sudden financial hardship due to crisis situations such as last year’s flooding, personal hardship and now the current cancellation of on-campus classes due to the current crisis.

Education takes a backseat for students who are food insecure or unable to pay housing and other expenses. Many don’t know the status of their employment, and many will return home for the rest of the semester. For some students, this is a life-altering crisis.

Please, if you’re able, consider a gift to the University of Nebraska Emergency Assistance fund to help at-risk students in our university family.
