Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer

There are more than 12 million cancer survivors in the United States – that's more than four times the number of cancer survivors in 1971 when the National Cancer Act was passed. Breast cancer survivors make up the largest group. The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center brings together a team of renowned scientists whose cancer research covers a wide range of research issues related to breast cancer with breast cancer clinicians.

A greater understanding of the disease in the clinical environment will continue to drive conversations and collaborations with scientists that will provide improvements in risk assessment, prognosis, treatment and survivorship for individual patients. Toward this end, cancer center members are engaged in research to define fundamental pathways in breast cancer, work that may involve genetic susceptibility, cellular and molecular events leading to the disease and metastasis. Studies of the cellular pathways involved in this reduced risk could lead to targeted therapies to prevent the disease.  We are making strides clinically with a team dedicated to gathering data on a unique vaccine trial for breast cancer patients with non-metastatic disease. Another promising clinical trial involves the use of Intrabeam low-energy radiation therapy to treat breast cancer, and yet another includes a study on cancer survivorship.

Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center researchers will continue their pursuit to identify environmental factors that account for about two-thirds of overall breast cancer risk to add to our efforts to help save lives and preserve families throughout Nebraska and beyond.

With your help, we will someday reach our goal of eliminating the pain and suffering caused by cancer.  Your gifts of support equate to a partnership, meaning that experts at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center are not only doing this critical work on behalf our friends and families, but alongside them as well. Please join us in this work.
