FAQs

How do I make a gift in memory or in honor of someone else?

Memorial gifts commemorate the values and character of a loved one who has died, and honorary gifts show appreciation for an admired person who is still living. Memorial and honorary gifts to benefit the University of Nebraska, the Nebraska Medicine health network or any one of the university’s affiliates are a meaningful way to celebrate someone, including family members, friends, teachers and students.

When a memorial or honorary gift is made, the University of Nebraska Foundation notifies the honoree or his or her family of the gift, but the gift amount is not disclosed. The gift is then administered and used as specified by the donor or the individual’s family.

What types of gifts can be made in honor of someone?

Any type of gift may be made in memory or honor of someone, including gifts made with cash or through the transfer of stocks. Gifts made online may be designated in memory or honor of someone when the online donation form is completed.

You may direct gifts to an existing fund or choose to establish a new fund and decide how the fund will help.

New funds may be established as expendable to provide immediate support as designated, or they may be established as permanently endowed to forever provide support through the fund’s annual income. Please consult with a development specialist at the foundation to determine the right option for you.

How may I match the gift with the interests of the person I wish to honor?

You may support any aspect of the University of Nebraska, Nebraska Medicine or any one of the university’s affiliates you decide is most appropriate for the person you wish to celebrate. This may include gifts that support student scholarships, faculty members, programs, patient experience, specific departments, medical or other research, capital improvements and much more.

May multiple people contribute?

Yes, many people may contribute in memory or honor of an individual, and they will receive a receipt for their gift. Foundation staff members can assist you in determining how you wish for the gifts to benefit the university, one of its affiliates or the Nebraska Medicine health network by sharing fund options with you. This may be done before or after the gifts are received.
