Prostate
The research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center will lead to new and innovative therapies to fight prostate cancer, a disease that claims the lives of 240 men every year in Nebraska and 32,000 men nationwide.
Prostate cancer researchers are testing the use of vaccines for altering the body's immune response to prostate cancer. They are also working to identify biomarkers to detect prostate cancer in its early stages, when tumors respond better to treatment. Other researchers work in the field of tumor angiogenesis, or how tumors form their own blood supply and survive, while some scientists are striving to understand how prostate cancer progresses and spreads to other parts of the body.
The Prostate Cancer Research Group, a gathering of those scientists and clinicians working in the area of prostate cancer, meets regularly, and shares ideas and findings. One major goal of these collaborative interdisciplinary meetings is to develop new individualized therapies and treatments for prostate cancer patients.
