Brain

Brain

Although the neuro-oncology program is young, the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center has brought together the needed expertise and resources to be a leader in the region in fighting brain and spinal tumors.

A focus group for brain and spine tumors brings scientists and physicians together to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of these tumors. The objectives of this group are to foster collaboration in neuro-oncology research and compete for national funding for basic and translational research as well as clinical trials.

Clinical trials study the side effects and best dose of a combination of different drugs when given together in treating patients with recurrent or progressive high-grade glioma or glioblastoma multiforme.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. In another study, scientists and physicians at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center are trying to determine what combination of chemotherapy and radiation is most effective in treating anaplastic glioma.
