Seeing the world through a viewfinder changes student’s point of view

Photographer Anna Reed is a journalism student at UNL. She’s traveled to Kyrgyzstan, India, Costa Rica and Brazil on study abroad trips. None of those would have been possible without the scholarships she’s received.
Says Anna: “I don’t think I’d be in college if it weren’t for scholarships.”
The Omaha native recently returned from Brazil, where she and other photojournalism students documented an old downtown neighborhood in Sao Paolo called Crakolandia, which translates to Crack Land.
In that strange world, they saw locals roaming the streets smoking crack. They met people who were drug dealers, but also met people who were extremely nice and helpful who were just stuck in a “horrible situation.”
“You are changed, every story you do,” Anna says. “Not just Kyrgyzstan. … You do a story down the street in Lincoln, you think about things a little bit differently.”
