Pancreatic

The statistics on pancreatic cancer are sobering: of the more than 44,000 Americans diagnosed with this type of cancer every year, nearly 95% will die from this disease.

UNMC continues to be a nationally recognized leader in pancreatic cancer research.

Like many areas of cancer research, projects in the area of pancreatic cancer reflect the importance of scientists and clinicians working together to find better treatments for pancreatic cancer. One such project explores the use of new and established pancreatic cancer therapies to inhibit pancreatic cancer. Scientists and physicians are also collaborating to determine why pancreatic cancer develops a resistance to gemcitabine, a drug commonly used in the treatment of cancer of the pancreas. Identifying pathways that can be targeted may lead to overcoming resistance to this drug.  Other scientists are studying why pancreatic cancer cells are so aggressive and become resistant to treatment. Another project focuses on developing a test for the early detection of pancreatic cancer.
