Support the Oral Cancer Programs

Oral Cancer is on the rise in the U.S., and claims more lives than skin cancer (melanoma). It strikes three times as many victims as cervical cancer, and is as common a leukemia. Five years after diagnosis, the death rate for oral cancer is about 50 percent. Sadly, treatment for oral cancer often includes disfiguring surgery. However, when diagnosed early, oral cancer can be treated without significant complications, increasing the chances of survival. The future can be promising, with focused expertise and strengthened educational experiences for dental students in the early diagnosis, preventive protocols, and vanguard research for oral cancer programs.

The UNMC College of Dentistry is uniquely poised to leverage its existing research and clinical strengths in cancer/cell signaling, oral pathology, and diagnostic sciences and collaborate with other preeminent UNMC programs related to oral cancer. The vision and goal of the college is to become a national leader in the area of research and education related to oral cancer.

Private charitable support is critical to maintaining excellence and ensuring the future success of the department.
