Peter J. Hoagland - A Nebraskan who served our state and country with integrity

Nebraskan Peter Hoagland was a true role model, serving our state and country with integrity. Graduating from Stanford in 1963 and Yale Law School in 1968, Peter served in the U.S. Army as an intelligence officer. He was first elected to the Nebraska Legislature from Omaha in 1978. Hoagland wrote many of the political accountability and open meeting laws that remain on the books today. In the Legislature, he was chair of the Judiciary Committee. He was active on many issues, but known especially for lessening groundwater pollution, toughening drunk driving laws, modernizing education and working to lower health care costs. He was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1988 from Nebraska's 2nd District. In Congress, he was known as a member who mastered the issues and the process, a workhorse who could be counted on. Hoagland worked with both Democrats and Republicans in Congress. He passed major legislation his freshman year, cracking down on financial institution irregularities. He was appointed to the prestigious Ways and Means Committee his sophomore year. Hoagland received near perfect ratings in support of working men and women, environmental issues and education issues.
