A Legacy Made Simple

A simple way to support future generations of students is to name the University of Nebraska Foundation the beneficiary of your:

  • Retirement plan, such as an IRA, 401(k), 403(b), and others
  • Bank and brokerage accounts
  • Life insurance policy

Beneficiary designations let you specify the area on campus you want to support. It’s literally as easy as filling out a form.

You can obtain a “change of beneficiary form” by contacting your insurer or retirement plan administrator. The form takes just a few minutes to complete, yet the impact of your gift will be realized in students’ lives for generations to come. For more information, please contact our gift planning team at gift.planning@nufoundation.org or (800) 432-3216.

Retirement plan assets

Retirement plan assets are subject to income taxes during your lifetime and upon your death. If you leave retirement assets to a non-spouse beneficiary, they may be subject to both income and estate taxes. Many people prefer to avoid this double taxation by directing retirement plan assets as a gift to charity, in which case the gift is fully tax deductible from the estate as a charitable gift. Other assets may be left to family members that are not subject to income taxes when received.

Bank and brokerage accounts

Donors can direct the assets in a checking, savings or brokerage account to the University of Nebraska Foundation. This is a simple way to make a gift outside of the probate process, meaning it will take less time to get the gift working on campus.

Life insurance

The University of Nebraska Foundation can also be named as a beneficiary or owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy. You may change the owner and/or beneficiary designation of an existing policy or purchase a new policy with a designations.

A "change of beneficiary form" can be obtained by contacting your insurer or retirement plan administrator.
