Myrna Newland, M.D., Endowed Professorship in Anesthesiology
Myrna Newland, M.D., professor of anesthesiology, has worked passionately, consistently and diligently behind the scenes for 45 years serving patients, training students and residents, and mentoring colleagues.
Dr. Newland graduated from the UNMC College of Medicine in 1964 when she was one of only four women in the college. She completed her internship, residency and fellowship in anesthesiology at UNMC. She began her career as an assistant professor of surgery and held numerous positions throughout the Department of Anesthesiology. Twice in the 1990s, she served as interim chair of the department.
She has been honored and recognized for her work at UNMC with the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award, The Chancellor’s Silver “U” Award, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Dr. Newland touched the lives of many students and residents through mentoring, educating and advocating for equal opportunity. She has trained uncountable numbers of medical students and house staff, some who remain on faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology and many who serve our Nebraska community, as well as throughout the nation.
