Gifford Laboratory Development Fund
Ophthalmologist Dr. Harold Gifford, Sr. was one of the Founders of the Omaha Medical College, in 1881, which became the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1902. He chaired the ophthalmology department for more than a quarter of a century, from 1898 to 1924. Dr. Gifford's older son, Sanford Gifford, M.D., set up his own private ophthalmology laboratory on campus and published 53 scientific papers by the time he was 37 years old. Harold Gifford, Jr., was the third member of the family to enter ophthalmology in 1934 and became chairman of the department in 1964. The Gifford Laboratory of Ophthalmology was dedicated in April 1993 and moved into the Durham Research Center in 2003. Gifts to this fund honor the Gifford Legacy and provide support for the laboratory by purchasing lab equipment and providing seed grants for innovation awards.
