Nebraska Public Interest Law Fund
The Nebraska Public Interest Law Fund (NPILF) at the College of Law funds students who want to do public interest and public service work during the summer after their first and second year of law school. There is a significant interest among students in public interest law but most of the organizations that serve people who cannot otherwise afford legal services are not able to pay for summer law clerks. Public service agencies and non-profit legal and policy organizations are similarly situated. Many Nebraska Law students are interested in doing this kind of work and it is important that they gain experience while in law school if they are going to apply for permanent work in these kinds of organizations after they graduate.
NPILF makes grants to students who have the opportunity to work for qualifying organizations in either unpaid or underpaid internships during the summer. In the past, students have worked for nonprofits dedicated to juvenile justice, civil rights, civic reform, and other issues faced by underserved populations. A committee of faculty and students reviews all grant applications and then makes awards based on need and opportunity.
Recently, we discovered that Nebraska Law has the smallest public interest law fund among all of the Big 10 law schools. We would like to remedy this so that more of our students can gain the experience they want and need in order to have careers serving the underserved. Beginning in 2013, several law firms in Omaha and Lincoln have made donations to this fund, but we have a long way to go before we satisfy the need among our students.
