Sgt. Justin Duffy Memorial Scholarship Fund

Joe and Janet Duffy laid their son to rest in June with the support of hundreds of friends who attended the funeral. Justin Duffy graduated from UNK in 2000 with a criminal justice degree. He went on to join the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division where he was deployed to Iraq to provide escort security for high ranking Army officers. He was killed June 2, 2009 in eastern Baghdad after a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee. He was 31. In accordance with SGT Duffy's outstanding service his awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge. Joe and Janet Duffy, and members of Justin's Platoon, have set up a scholarship fund in his honor. The fund benefits UNK students who are studying criminal justice, health science or who are members of UNK's ROTC program. Preference is given to residents of Dawson County, where Duffy graduated from Cozad High School.
