Estate gift to provide scholarships to students at UNO

Student support is one priority area of the University of Nebraska Foundation’s Campaign for Nebraska and for UNO.

A $500,000 gift will create new scholarship opportunities for students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where more than 80 percent of students seek financial assistance to attend college. Student support is one priority area of the University of Nebraska Foundation’s Campaign for Nebraska and for UNO.

The estate of Betty Haupt Andreskowski, a UNO alumna, has made this substantial gift to the foundation to create new need-based and merit-based scholarship programs for students attending UNO.

“We appreciate Mrs. Andreskowski’s compassion and foresight through her estate plans that generously support UNO students as they pursue their dreams of a higher education,” said UNO Chancellor John Christensen. “Support from private donors like her is critically important to ensuring that all students have access to an affordable education. These scholarships will help UNO attract the best and brightest students, and those in need of financial assistance, to attend college.”

Born in 1924 in St. Joseph, Mo., Andreskowski moved to Omaha as a child. She earned a bachelor of arts degree with special preparation in English, Spanish and social studies from the Municipal University of Omaha in 1946. During college, Andreskowski was a member of the Kappa Psi Delta sorority and served as rush chairman. She was also a candidate for the university’s annual Tomahawk Beauty Contest.

In 1947, Andreskowski obtained a master of arts degree with an emphasis in history from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Upon graduation, she was hired as a history teacher and counselor at South High School in Omaha.

She married Theodore Andreskowski in 1955 and his career moved them to Buenos Aires, Argentina, Chicago and eventually Oklahoma City, where the couple retired. Betty Andreskowski passed away on November 1, 2010, in Oklahoma City.

“Betty remained in close touch with some sorority sisters, teaching associates and students. She never forgot Omaha and her life there,” said Barbara Ozinga, a friend of Andreskowski. “With her generous bequest to the Omaha campus to fund scholarships, I believe she is truly at home.”
