Lungs4Life

Lungs4Life

The Lungs4Life lung cancer research fund was created to receive and direct monies raised by the Lungs4Life foundation.  All money is dedicated to lung cancer research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.  Lungs4Life has held at least two fundraisers per year.  To date, they have donated $37,500 into this fund.  They are proud to support UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, thus keeping the money they raised right here in Nebraska.

Lungs4Life was founded by Tim and Leah Bochnicek of Omaha after Leah was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer.  Leah never smoked and was an otherwise healthy 42-year-old when she received the shocking diagnosis.  The cancer is not genetic and is said to be due to “environmental factors.”  Leah’s cancer contained a mutation, which meant it could be treated with an oral chemo drug.  She has been on the drug for over two years with great success; the original tumor disappeared!  Unfortunately, doctors consider her cancer to be incurable and furthermore, they anticipate that the cancer will eventually ‘outsmart’ the drug and return.  There are currently additional chemotherapy drugs on the market for Leah’s type of cancer that can be tried if this drug fails.

Tim and Leah found that lung cancer is the least funded of all the major cancers and decided that they needed to raise funds to help secure her future and others.  They also learned that lung cancer has increasingly been diagnosed in relatively young, non-smokers, like her.  They have since met several other people like her, even here in the Omaha metro.  To learn more about Leah’s story, visit their website: www.lungs4lifefoundation.org

Your support of lung cancer research is needed and appreciated.  ANYONE can get lung cancer.
