Astir CASNR Emergency Student Aid Fund

Astir CASNR Emergency Student Aid Fund

Thank you for considering a gift to the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Emergency Student Aid Fund. This critical fund enables the dean of the college to award much-needed stipends to deserving CASNR students who are at risk of disruption to their education as a result of financial hardship. This adversity could be caused by the loss of a parent, a personal medical crisis, job loss or other reasons. This fund was established soon after the university learned that one in three students worry about not having enough to eat when surveyed. This finding is similar to what other colleges and universities are learning.

The fund is affectionately known as Astir, which means star in the Greek language. The idea for the support fund came from Ritsa Giannakas of Lincoln, who is of Greek heritage and whose name is Astir spelled backward. In 2015 when she was just 13 years old, she started the fund with a gift. Her father, Konstantinos Giannakas, a professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics, is proud that his daughter considered the needs of others in wishing to start this community giving fund that will help many students over the years.

Thank you for your contribution of any amount to support CASNR students facing personal adversity.
