Nebraska Engineering Research Fund

Nebraska Engineering Research Fund

The Nebraska Engineering Research Fund (NERF), provides seed money for promising technology and innovative research being conducted at the University of Nebraska. The NERF Advisory Board, which makes the awards, mentors faculty and students, giving them the valuable experience of presenting their research as commercial products and developing a marketing plan. NERF provides engineering faculty and their students the opportunity to advance their ideas and innovations while gaining experience in start-up and early stage technology ventures within the College of Engineering. In fact, it does even more.  It pays dividends:

  • Monetary Dividend: Not every idea in which NERF invests will succeed. But, when a business startup does take off, the University of Nebraska is given an equity stake in the new venture, providing the opportunity to realize a return.
  • State Economic Dividend: Nebraska has developed many great ideas and owns the intellectual property rights of these ideas. However, few are ever developed. NERF puts Nebraska's best ideas to work for Nebraska, creating jobs and opportunities for Nebraska graduates.
  • Education Dividend: Teaching and research are revitalized when students have the opportunity to see the practical application of ideas and concepts they are exploring. NERF shows our students that Nebraska offers unlimited possibilities.
