Student scholarship forever honors John Hlavacek and family

John Hlavacek, who spent the second half of his life in Omaha as a television news journalist, a city councilman, a travel agent and an author of 12 books, died Aug. 29, 2015, in California at age 97.

“His life was amazing, and so much of it was unplanned,” said his son Dr. James Hlavacek to the Omaha World-Herald. “He was an eternal optimist, humble and grateful for everything.”

In honor of his life and family, the Hlavaceks established the John, Pegge and Martina Hlavacek Distinguished Scholarship for students with financial need at the University of Nebraska Medical Center who study within the College of Medicine.

Hlavacek’s other children are Dr. Mary Mackiernan of Kauai, Hawaii; businessman Michael (Mackiernan) Hlavacek of Las Vegas; commercial airline pilot John Hlavacek of Boca Raton, Florida; and writer Suzanne Hlavacek of New York City.

The Omaha World-Herald has published a story in tribute to John Hlavacek, who columnist Michael Kelly says fell in love with Omaha. http://www.omaha.com/columnists/kelly/kelly-world-traveler-john-hlavacek-fell-in-love-with-omaha/article_fd67f1f4-c77b-51a9-86c7-ebcb779b849f.html?mode=image&photo=0
