Cancer center to be named for Fred and Pamela Buffett
A new cancer center at the University of Nebraska will be named the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, thanks to a gift from Pamela Buffett.
A new cancer center at the University of Nebraska will be named the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, thanks to a gift from Pamela Buffett. Pamela Buffett gave the gift, through her foundation, the Rebecca Susan Buffett Foundation, to honor her husband Fred, who died of cancer. Fred Buffett and Warren Buffett were first cousins.
“Fritz fought a courageous cancer battle until the very end,” said Susie Buffett, a relative of Pam Buffett. “It is truly exceptional for Pamela to make this gift in his honor, for the benefit of potentially thousands upon thousands of cancer patients worldwide. These patients will benefit from the research advances that will be developed here, as well as the outstanding patient care that will be delivered.”
The university and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, will begin construction on the project shortly. The cancer campus will include a hospital tower, a research tower and an outpatient clinic all dedicated to cancer.
Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Eppley Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, said the proximity of researchers and clinicians will hasten the transfer of scientific discoveries from the lab into new treatments benefitting patients.
“In this facility, medical scientists will discover the next generation of cancer therapies targeted toward molecular changes in tumors, resulting in a treatment regimen individualized for each patient,” Cowan said.
A gift from the CL Werner Foundation of Omaha will name the hospital tower the CL Werner Cancer Hospital, and a gift from the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation of Omaha will name the research tower the Suzanne and Walter Scott Cancer Research Tower.

University of Nebraska Foundation President Brian Hastings said hundreds of private donors have contributed to the project, as well as the state of Nebraska, Douglas County, the city of Omaha and employees, who conducted a fundraising campaign for the center, raising more than $322,000.
“The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center not only will house the best cancer physicians and researchers in the state, it also will help us attract even more of them to Nebraska to find a cure,” he said.
