About the University of Nebraska
The University of Nebraska was founded on February 15, 1869 “To afford the inhabitants of this state with the means of acquiring a thorough knowledge of the various branches of literature, science and the arts.”
Founded in Lincoln, the university included a medical center in Omaha in 1902. The former University of Omaha became the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1968 and the former Kearney State College joined the system in 1991, changing its name to the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
