Doctor Priorities

The College of Medicine is involved in a campaign to raise $159 million dollars to support research, patient care and medical education. The college recently produced this video highlighting its priorities for the campaign.

Brain Center

Areas of neurological expertise at UNMC include multiple sclerosis, cancer of the nervous system, movement disorders, muscle disorders, neurophysiology testing, epilepsy, and complications of the nervous system caused by AIDS. UNMC is also dedicated to educating the next generation of health care providers, performing on the cutting edge of science, and serving the people of our state and the world.

Regenerative Medicine Center

Regenerative medicine is a broad definition for innovative therapies that will enable the body to repair, replace, restore and regenerate damaged or diseased cells, tissues and organs. Scientists at UNMC are engaged in research to repair a damaged heart following an attack, replace skin for burn victims, restore movement after spinal cord injury and regenerate pancreatic tissue to produce insulin for diabetics.

Heart Center

The Division of Cardiology is dedicated to providing extraordinary patient care. The department also offers numerous outstanding educational opportunities for our medical students, residents, fellows, and staff. Research currently underway in the Cardiology division of UNMC includes methods to identify inflammation in arteries before it causes heart attacks and the use of ultrasound to break apart bloodclots in arteries.

Center for Liver and Digestive Diseases

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is interested in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal system. Areas of expertise include irritable bowel syndrome, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic disease, cancer of the upper and lower GI tract and motility disorders. The section has active clinical and basic research programs at UNMC, including a world-renown liver transplant program and Alcohol Research Center.

Eye Institute

Eye research currently underway at UNMC includes macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy. The division has plans to build the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute—an ophthalmology center which will allow UNMC to conduct the most advanced clinical eye care and research in the region.
